PRG 2026.6: Choosing NozzlePRO or FEPipe for Local Stress Analysis

Overview

A nozzle load that passes a piping check can still leave a vessel engineer with a local stress problem. Paulin Research Group’s software is worth considering at that handover: how should the connection be represented, and what evidence belongs in the issued calculation? This research-based technical assessment uses official material checked on November 7, 2026 UTC; we did not independently install or test the software.

PRG is a family of pressure-equipment and piping analysis tools rather than one interchangeable solver. Vela’s acquisition announcement records that Computer Engineering, Inc. acquired Engineering Physics Services, Inc., doing business as Paulin Research Group, on January 25, 2022, within the Vela/Constellation group. Current PRG product pages and release material continue to offer the software and support.

The NozzlePRO name now needs a release reference

The most important finding for an existing user is in the 2026.6.0.3495 release notes, the newest entry verified here: the former NozzlePRO is now NozzlePRO Legacy, while PVPTPro has been renamed NozzlePRO. An old brochure or training file using “NozzlePRO” therefore does not, by itself, identify the current application. Specify the product, build and model origin when requesting a demonstration or transferring an archived calculation.

The current NozzlePRO page describes multi-nozzle pressure-vessel configurations, structural attachments and interactions, pressure/external-load/thermal evaluations, and linear, nonlinear and elastic-plastic FEA with ASME VIII-2 Part 5 reporting. These are vendor-documented capabilities, not an independent finding that every geometry or loading history will meet a project’s acceptance criteria.

Follow one connection from dimensions to a defensible report

For a hypothetical vessel nozzle carrying piping loads, the input package should establish shell and nozzle geometry, reinforcement, materials, pressure and temperature, forces and moments, and the load combinations to be assessed. Closely spaced nozzles or a nearby lug make interaction an explicit modeling question. The engineer should ask the vendor to show how the chosen template represents that geometry and where its model boundaries lie.

PRG’s FEPipe technical description explains the parametric process: dimensional and load inputs generate geometry, mesh and boundary conditions, with model editing through Drawing Tools. Its scope includes shells, beams, axisymmetric and brick elements, plus local piping and vessel geometries. FEPipe is the broader candidate when a component must be connected to other geometry or edited beyond the initial template; the current NozzlePRO offering concentrates the selection around vessel/nozzle and attachment workflows.

The useful deliverable is the model basis together with interpreted stresses, displacements, load capacity or code checks relevant to the task. Automated stress categorization cannot establish that the specified end restraint represents the real vessel. In an acceptance exercise, review the generated mesh and constraints, the applied load directions and units, the material curve, and the sensitivity of the governing result to reasonable modeling choices. Those are proposed engineering checks, not tests performed for this article.

Code support and model exchange are build-specific

The release history records ASME VIII-2 2025-edition additions and Section II-D 2025 material data in 2025.12, plus mesh-quality and stress-error-estimate reports in applicable products. Its 2025.4 entry identifies B31.1/B31.3 2024 updates for named piping applications. A suite-wide list of codes is insufficient for procurement: agree the code edition, failure mode, analysis method and report supported by the exact licensed program.

The same release notes document CAESAR II v15 support in FEATools and Konnect, and direct v15 load import in the then-named NozzlePRO. They also record CEI JSON vessel exchange, COMPRESS XML import in Konnect, and PCF piping-file import in specified tools. Treat those as versioned interfaces. For today’s renamed NozzlePRO, ask PRG to demonstrate the intended route with your source build, including units, load-case mapping and any geometry that must be completed manually.

Our CAESAR II / Aspect Pipe Stress assessment explains the upstream load-case responsibility. Local FEA and a whole piping-system stress model serve related but distinct decisions. For storage-tank work, the AMETank article provides context for the broader tank-design deliverable; a local tank-nozzle calculation is not the complete tank design. Neither internal link establishes an automatic connector.

Separate a capability list from the purchased configuration

The FEPipe technical brochure identifies Drawing Tools, nonlinear analysis and fitness-for-service as optional upgrades in subscription packages. It predates the latest naming change. The current product page’s wider description should therefore be reconciled with the quoted entitlement rather than interpreted as a promise that every listed function is included.

The latest release adds a centralized entitlement service across PRG programs. The reviewed sources establish installed software and commercial licensing, but do not establish a complete current operating-system/hardware matrix, virtual-desktop support, offline rights or a public automation API contract. Obtain those details for 2026.6.0.3495 before preparing the workstation or promising an unattended integration. Subscription references do not make the analysis a browser-based service.

PRG maintains an official support contact, while its brochure directs questions about older Hexagon-sold PRG licences to PRG sales. The purchase should state the modules, seats, maintenance and technical-support entitlement, particularly when an organization is moving from a legacy product name or distributor arrangement.

Choose the modeling route around the unusual detail

A general-purpose alternative such as Ansys Mechanical documents structural, thermal, nonlinear/contact and scripting capabilities. Compare it with PRG on the actual connection: geometry representation, required constitutive behavior, load history, mesh control, and the effort needed to produce the accepted code report. A team whose geometry and report fit PRG’s documented templates has a concrete reason to evaluate that specialized route. If the deciding requirement is a custom material, contact arrangement or coupled workflow, require both suppliers to demonstrate it before choosing; the public evidence supports no universal accuracy or speed ranking.

Confidence is strongest in PRG’s current naming, release identity, documented analysis families and dated exchange features. It is lower for the precise purchased module boundaries and installation requirements. For a nozzle or attachment decision, shortlist the appropriate PRG application with one representative geometry, its governing piping loads and the required code edition. Ask the responsible stress engineer to approve the generated model and report basis before extending that workflow across the project.
