A magnetic anomaly becomes useful for exploration only when the interpreter can trace it back to the survey measurements, corrections and assumptions that produced it. Oasis montaj is a candidate for keeping that processing history connected to maps and subsurface interpretation. This research-based technical assessment draws on official sources checked on November 8, 2026 UTC; we did not independently install or test the software.

The current supplier is Seequent, part of Bentley Systems. Seequent’s December 20, 2018 announcement records its completed acquisition of Geosoft, the developer associated with Oasis montaj, and its corporate history records Bentley’s acquisition of Seequent in 2021. The earlier draft’s “Geosoft (now gSys)” wording is not supported by those sources. GM-SYS is a modelling extension family, not evidence of a renamed corporate owner.
Keep the survey and the interpretation in the same conversation
Seequent’s product description documents a desktop environment for magnetic, gravity, electromagnetic, resistivity and radiometric data, with geological maps, drillholes and geochemistry providing context. Its practical attraction is the progression from imported survey data through QC, corrections, filters and gridding to profiles, maps, sections and model visualization. Which methods are available depends on the configuration and extensions.
For a hypothetical regional gravity-and-magnetic study, begin with the observed values, positions, coordinate reference system, elevations and the acquisition information needed for the chosen corrections. Keep the original channels and distinguish corrected or filtered derivatives. A smooth grid cannot establish that survey levelling, terrain effects or coordinate transformations were appropriate; the interpreter needs the acquisition and processing basis alongside the attractive image.
The official format list includes survey ASCII/CSV and Geosoft XYZ files, grids such as GeoTIFF and GXF, and spatial formats including SHP, DXF, GOCAD, Surpac STR/DTM and UBC model files. Some formats require specific extensions. For a real handover, verify the exact import/export direction, units, coordinates and metadata with a representative file, rather than treating a supported extension as proof of lossless round-trip exchange.
Choose the modelling scope before buying extensions
The current configurations separate the core gravity/magnetic processing environment from Basin Modelling and Ultimate. Basin Modelling adds specialized 2D gravity and magnetic tools for regional structure and layered-earth interpretation. Ultimate groups the desktop capabilities across additional geophysical methods and advanced modelling. A base licence should not be read as blanket entitlement to every technique shown on the general product page.
VOXI is a further distinction: Seequent describes cloud computation returning inversion results to the Oasis montaj desktop, and licenses VOXI separately using consumption-based terms. Cloud inversion is a computation workflow, not proof that the desktop application is browser-based. Before committing survey data, ask how the proposed service handles uploads, project location, retention, access and computational consumption.
A geologically constrained inversion remains conditional on its observations, uncertainties, parameterization and constraints. When comparing candidate models, inspect the predicted-versus-observed response and the geological assumptions that permit different subsurface explanations. This is a proposed acceptance exercise, not a result obtained for this assessment. Our SKUA GOCAD article provides related context for the geological-model side of a handover; the format list alone does not establish a live connector or a shared interpretation.
What the 2026 release evidence actually establishes
The support page identifies 2026.1.1 as the current release and describes it as maintenance containing security updates and fixes for issues introduced in 2026.1. The separately linked 2026.1 release notes, indexed as July 2026, document multi-channel reordering/property edits and cursor-centred map zoom. They are not a detailed 2026.1.1 change log.
For airborne radiometric work, those 2026.1 notes describe visible NASVD filter-selection aids, spectral comparisons and a linear energy-peak alignment correction in the Radiometric Processing Extension. They explicitly distinguish inspection aids from changes to how smoothing is applied. The same notes identify fixes involving grid projections and geospatial PDF export. Review such changes against an existing processing sequence before accepting regenerated deliverables; no independent accuracy or processing-time improvement is established here.
The product page documents GX scripts and embedded Python routines for automation, and the versioned help supplies procedures and parameter documentation. For an automated pipeline, request the supported Python/GX versions and demonstrate the complete chain on a retained input dataset, including warnings and output metadata. A scripting capability is more useful when another geophysicist can reproduce its processing choices.
Prepare a Windows desktop and a precise entitlement
The current requirements matrix lists 64-bit Windows 11 and .NET 8 for 2026.1.1, 8 GB minimum memory and 16–32 GB recommended, with SSD storage recommended for both OS and data. Its graphics table distinguishes minimum OpenGL 3.3 support for NVIDIA/AMD from recommended OpenGL 4.0 and 4 GB graphics memory; Intel entries are listed separately. Installation requires administrator permissions and at least 2 GB free on the Program Files drive. Size the workstation against the actual database, grids and 3D workload rather than assuming the minimum is a project recommendation.
Virtualized operation is supported with conditions that Seequent asks customers to confirm with regional support. Most product configurations and extensions are advertised as 12-month named or shared subscriptions, while Ultimate also offers daily access and VOXI has separate consumption terms. Obtain the exact extension list, offline/authentication conditions, sharing rules and service entitlement in the quote. The support page also distinguishes current, supported, reduced-support, self-serve and retired releases; an older installation’s availability does not establish ongoing support.

Compare the processing chain, not a software category
INTREPID 3D is a relevant alternative for magnetic, gravity and radiometric QC, levelling, filtering, gridding and interpretation; its product page also documents tensor workflows and an automation API. Compare the same survey’s corrections, levelling diagnostics, grid handling, reproducibility and required modelling methods in the actual licensed tiers. Where an established INTREPID processing chain already satisfies those requirements, migrating needs a concrete data-exchange or interpretation benefit. Oasis montaj is worth shortlisting when its documented database, multi-method environment and Seequent modelling handover match the team’s work.
For an MT-focused project, our WinGLink article provides related reading about a more specialized processing question; sharing the word “geophysics” does not make every product interchangeable. Confidence is high in Oasis montaj’s verified release, desktop requirements and documented configuration boundaries. The unresolved purchase questions are the precise extensions, automation compatibility and cloud-service terms. Ask the supplier to carry one representative survey from raw channels to the final issued map or constrained model, with each transformation and assumption available for review.
