OrcaFlex 11.6e: A Technical Assessment of Coupled Offshore Analysis

Overview

For a floating vessel connected to a riser or mooring system, the connection loads depend on how the vessel, lines, environment and seabed are represented together. OrcaFlex is worth evaluating when that coupled response is the engineering decision, rather than treating the line as an isolated static shape. This research-based technical assessment uses official sources checked on November 8, 2026 UTC; we did not independently install or test the software.

OrcaFlex is developed and supplied by Orcina Ltd. Orcina’s company history describes its independent, privately owned origins and the gradual consolidation of earlier specialist applications into OrcaFlex; that historical narrative is not a current shareholder register. The current release index identifies 11.6e as the latest 11.6 release verified here. Orcina continues to publish downloads, technical documentation, upgrades and support routes for the product.

Build the system that will actually carry the load

The 11.6 technical specification documents risers, moorings, pipelay, installation systems and coupled floating-wind models, with nonlinear time-domain and linear frequency-domain methods. Lines, vessels, buoys, winches, constraints and environmental data are combined into a system model. Selecting the method and the permitted motion degrees of freedom is part of defining the study, not a setting that can be ignored once an animation looks plausible.

For a hypothetical lazy-wave riser, the input basis would establish geometry, section lengths, mass and buoyancy, structural stiffness, contents, end connections, vessel hydrodynamic or imposed-motion data, waves, current and seabed conditions. The line-model documentation explains the lumped-mass representation: nodes carry lumped properties and massless segments connect them. Users choose the sections and discretization. A buoyancy attachment is placed at the nearest node to its specified arc length, so the discretization can affect even the represented attachment location.

The specification documents fully coupled tension, bending and torsion, contact and clashing, and fluid loads based on Morison and cross-flow assumptions. These are model choices with a physical range of applicability; they are not a substitute for resolving arbitrary flow physics around every structure. The proposed acceptance exercise should vary line segmentation, time step and relevant physical assumptions until the governing response is understood, with the responsible engineer deciding what convergence is adequate for the project.

Useful outputs include line forces, moments, curvature, displacement histories, range graphs and fatigue results. The engineer must connect each result to an acceptance criterion: tension capacity, bend limits, clearance, fatigue damage or a stated code check. A maximum tension from one simulated realization does not by itself establish the long-term design extreme, and a listed code-check facility does not certify that the whole project complies with a standard.

The known-issue list belongs beside the model

Orcina’s 11.6e change notes document corrections involving multibody WAMIT reference origins, wave time-history sampling and spectral-fatigue damage under specified correction-factor/endurance-limit conditions. They distinguish unaffected analysis types where applicable. For an existing study, identify whether the installed build and calculation method fall within a documented issue before deciding which calculations need to be rerun.

The 11.6e known-bug list also describes modal-analysis cases involving repeated modes, unstable equilibria or statically indeterminate models, and a frequency-domain wave-drift reporting issue for vessels with calculated three-degree-of-freedom low-frequency motion. These are specific published conditions, not evidence that every OrcaFlex result is unreliable. They do mean that a review relying on those outputs must address the issue and obtain Orcina’s current guidance instead of relying on a generic “latest version” label.

Use automation to preserve the calculation basis

Orcina documents low-level DLL interfaces and higher-level Python and MATLAB interfaces in the automation specification, together with batch processing, result extraction and Distributed OrcaFlex for multi-licence environments. A useful procurement demonstration would create a parameter variation, run the agreed analysis, capture errors and extract the governing output with its units, model version and case identifier. The fact that an API exists does not establish that a buyer’s unattended workflow is licensed or correctly implemented.

The manual’s compatibility warnings recommend binary data files for transfers between program versions because text files lack the same compatibility protection. Restart analyses have additional parent/child version considerations. Retain the issued model and scripts, and have their owner approve conversion before comparing new output with an old calculation.

The technical specification documents import of OrcaWave, AQWA and WAMIT hydrodynamic data. OrcaWave is an included, separate diffraction application, rather than a competing replacement for OrcaFlex. VIV workflows involving third-party solvers have their own dependencies; verify solver versions and licences before assuming an interface supplies the external calculation itself.

Choose a workstation and a licence plan for the case set

Orcina’s hardware guidance recommends 64-bit Windows, at least 4 GB memory, adequate simulation-file storage, a 1920×1080 or greater display, and DirectX 12 graphics; Excel is used by the spreadsheet automation facilities. The page explicitly says OrcaFlex does not offload calculations to the graphics card. Treat those as vendor guidance, not a measured sizing result for a large coupled model. Obtain the exact supported Windows build, Python/MATLAB pairing and remote-desktop configuration for the delivered release.

For many independent cases, Orcina recommends considering physical core count, per-case memory and local storage throughput, while warning that extra execution threads beyond physical cores may not improve throughput. Its separate OrcaWave guidance notes that a large diffraction mesh can need considerably more memory. A workstation purchase should therefore reflect the actual mix of time-domain cases and diffraction jobs, without assuming that a GPU or a larger logical-core count guarantees faster delivery.

The commercial product page offers purchase and leasing arrangements with maintenance, upgrades and support. For FlexNet floating licences, Orcina’s 11.6 migration notice requires licence-manager version 11.19.8 or newer before the upgrade. Confirm seats, borrowing/offline use, remote or cloud-hosted execution, renewal and third-party solver rights in the quote; an installed solver with network licensing is not automatically a browser service.

Compare the coupled model and the downstream decision

DNV’s Sima offering, based on Simo and Riflex, is a direct alternative for coupled marine systems, moorings, risers and offshore operations. Compare the required vessel/line coupling, hydrodynamic data route, seabed/contact representation, code-check scope and automated reporting on the same agreed case. An operation already using a Sesam workflow has a concrete reason to evaluate its data handover; a team needing OrcaFlex’s documented library and scripting integration has a concrete reason to evaluate that route. The reviewed material supports no universal accuracy or speed ranking.

For pipelay-specific context, see our OFFPIPE article. A different downstream question is covered in the PRCI on-bottom stability article: a seabed stability assessment should not be treated as interchangeable with the complete vessel-line installation simulation. Neither link establishes an automatic connector.

Confidence is strong in OrcaFlex’s documented model structure, integration options and the verified 11.6e release evidence. Project predictions remain conditional on the model basis, convergence and issue applicability. Shortlist it when the coupled system and automation surface fit the required deliverable; before adopting it, ask Orcina and the approving engineer to trace one governing response from inputs to acceptance criteria, including the relevant release fixes and known limitations.
