Datamine MineScape 2026: Connecting Coal Design, Scheduling and Haulage

Overview

For a surface coal operation, changing a ramp or dump design can alter haul effort, move a production constraint, and change the apparent value of a multi-year plan. MineScape 2026 is most interesting where engineers want to examine those consequences together, while preserving the geological and operating assumptions behind them.

This research-based technical assessment uses official material checked on 8 November 2026; MineScape has not been independently installed or tested.

Datamine’s current documentation catalogue identifies MineScape as an integrated geological modelling and mine-design suite for open-cut and underground operations, tailored to coal and stratigraphic deposits. The 2026 release extends that foundation through rapid design tools, long-range scheduling, and haulage simulation. The practical buying decision is which parts of that connected workflow the site can populate and validate, and which applications its license actually includes.

Read the 2026 release as a set of connected applications

MineScape is currently offered by Datamine. The 27 July 2015 Constellation announcement establishes Datamine’s acquisition from CAE and placement in Vela Software; Vela’s current portfolio continues to list Datamine. These sources establish the supplier’s corporate lineage, not a complete history of every MineScape intellectual-property transfer.

The public release announcement, listed by Datamine as 27 March 2026, and the MineScape 2026 release notes support the 2026 release family. The public catalogue reviewed does not identify an exact latest maintenance build. The image filename’s v13.0 label is not release evidence and is not used to establish a version.

The release notes identify Rapid Pit and Rapid Dump applications, a Long Range Scheduler, and a Digital Twin & Simulation product containing Cycle-Time Calculator, Haul Simulator, and GPS applications. Their appearance in one release document should not be read as a promise that every application is included in a base MineScape order. Ask for the product-to-license mapping before judging the cost or scope of a proposed implementation.

Carry the geological basis through the design change

A representative evaluation should begin with the site’s stratigraphic interpretation, surveyed topography, mining limits, material qualities, and design rules. Define the bench, berm, batter, ramp, and dump assumptions before comparing design scenarios. The 2026 release notes document interactive Rapid design tools and Rapid Slicer conversion of dump solids into blocks with scheduling metadata. These connections make metadata continuity an engineering requirement: a geometric change must not silently change the meaning of the material or schedule attributes.

For the geological modelling and mine-design stage, our Surpac assessment provides a related comparison context. A site should compare seam handling, required geological structures, editing rules, reserve reconciliation, and its actual model exchange rather than assume that two mining suites represent the same deposit equally. The presence of a Surpac design import does not establish equivalent geological semantics or a lossless model round trip.

MineScape’s documented 2026 design import changes include GeoPackage and MapInfo table files, plus browsing outside the project directory for specified formats including Surpac, Vulcan, and shapefiles. Those are concrete exchange capabilities. The public evidence reviewed does not define every supported source version, property type, coordinate transformation, or general external API. A small import–edit–export acceptance case should preserve a known material quantity and location before a whole project is converted.

Separate the economic schedule from operational feasibility

The Long Range Scheduler section describes a scenario-based optimization engine for multi-year surface coal planning. Its inputs include pit, dump, stockpile, and haulage models, with costs, revenues, constraints, periods, and discounting. Datamine documents Global, Forward, and Sliding Window strategies, financial and movement reports, material-flow diagrams, and period-based 3D views. This scope should not be generalized to every underground planning method supported elsewhere in the suite.

An NPV result remains conditional on those economic and operating inputs. Compare scenarios using the same price basis, discount convention, cost definition, haul assumptions, and resource limits. The release notes document an objective and available strategies; they do not provide independent proof of global optimality, economic forecast accuracy, or a speed advantage on the reader’s dataset.

Shorter-horizon control has a different job. The Tactical Scheduler changes add automated sequence assignment from source/destination rules, quality and quantity targeting over individual, cumulative, or rolling periods, and Excel target reports. Source names must match the block metadata, and destinations must be defined in Material Flow. Automatic sequencing therefore depends on disciplined naming and movement rules; it does not relieve the engineer of checking access, capacity, and the reason a target is missed.

Our MineSched technical assessment discusses another target-based tactical scheduling workflow. Dassault Systèmes’ official MineSched description documents scheduling from pre-created block and polygon models, with stockpiles, haulage requirements, and underground development/production. Over that shared scheduling task, compare precedence logic, calendar and resource constraints, material-quality targeting, and reporting using the same mining area. MineSched alone is not a replacement for MineScape’s entire stratigraphic modelling and simulation suite.

An upgrade is not just opening the old schedule

A consequential 2026 migration change is the use of SQLite by Tactical Scheduler, Long Range Scheduler, and Digital Twin & Simulation; GDB and UG Survey continue to use SQL Server. The notes describe importing a 2023 scheduling database from SQL Server, but explicitly warn that 2023 sequences cannot be used as they stand: an activity must be assigned to the sequence and a destination to every block before rerunning, animation, and reporting.

The same document states that scenario cloning copies items including meshes, activities, sequence, material flow, and equipment, but does not clone the database or scheduling reports. Branching starts from a selected period and reflects its excavation state. These distinctions matter when a planner expects a scenario to be a complete independent archive. Keep a controlled copy of the source project and reconcile quantities, destinations, dates, and reports after migration.

A haulage simulation needs a calibrated connection to the site

The Cycle-Time Calculator documentation describes route-based calculations using elevation profiles, road conditions, loading state, rolling resistance, and delays, with cycle-time and fuel results exportable to Excel. Haul Simulator uses those scenarios to model multiple trucks, configurable starts, and fleet interactions. A defensible evaluation should reconcile a representative route against the site’s measured cycle components and operating conditions; no measured calibration or simulation result is claimed here.

The GPS application is specifically documented as connecting to Sodep Minetrack and retrieving equipment position and activity data at configurable intervals. That evidence does not establish a connector to any fleet system or an automatically synchronized, complete mine replica. Confirm supported versions, field mapping, coordinate/time conventions, retrieval behaviour, and what happens to stale or missing data before treating an operational display as current.

Resolve the AI discrepancy and the deployment contract

The public evidence is inconsistent about AI availability. The 2026 release notes describe an optional assistant, enabled during installation or through Admin Settings, for information access, supported-file analysis, selected commands, and MPL script assistance. Yet the current product page labels MineScape AI “coming soon” and advertises a broader set of AI functions. This assessment does not assume that those advertised functions ship in a customer’s build. Obtain written confirmation of availability, entitlement, supported actions, model/provider, data handling, and review controls before including AI in an implementation case.

MPL scripting and Code Editor changes in the release notes establish an in-product customization surface, not a fully specified external automation API. Generated scripts or suggested actions need review against the intended geometry, quantities, and project permissions. A vendor statement about safeguards is not independent verification of data privacy or engineering correctness.

The public MineScape catalogue provides release notes, but the sources accessed did not establish a current MineScape-specific OS/hardware matrix or full installation manual. Confirm the supported desktop/server environment, CPU, RAM, GPU driver, storage, Office integration, database arrangements, and exact license runtime for the selected applications. Requirements for Studio RM, Studio EM, or another Datamine program must not be substituted. The described installed CAD applications and project databases also do not establish that MineScape is a browser SaaS product.

Datamine’s general agreement effective 1 June 2026 makes scope and terms dependent on the applicable order and any controlling negotiated agreement. It distinguishes term and explicitly designated perpetual licenses; it does not prove which options are offered for a particular MineScape bundle. The support page restricts portal resources to customers with maintained licenses. Confirm application entitlements, named/concurrent use, offline and VM/cloud rights, support, upgrades, and project access after a term ends in the actual contract.

MineScape 2026 is a credible candidate for a coal or stratigraphic operation seeking connected design, scheduling, and haulage scenario work. A team needing only tactical scheduling should compare that narrower requirement before adopting the full suite. Confidence is highest in the explicit 2026 release changes, especially the migration and application boundaries; AI availability, exact build compatibility, commercial deployment rights, and site-calibrated results remain unresolved. Start the evaluation with one design change and follow its material quantities, haul effort, sequence, and economic consequences through to a report an engineer can reconcile.
