RokDoc 2026.4 is most useful when a subsurface team wants the assumptions made at the well to remain visible in the seismic result. Rock physics, well ties, conditioning, inversion, pressure and geomechanics can sit in one connected geoprediction workflow. That continuity is valuable, but it also makes module selection and model validation central to the buying decision.

We reviewed current Ikon Science product pages, release material and the public license matrix. We did not install RokDoc or benchmark a dataset, so the article describes documented scope and project risks rather than measured runtime, accuracy or usability.
RokDoc starts with the rock-physics question
Ikon Science presents RokDoc as a geoprediction platform, not a general-purpose seismic interpretation package. Its role is to connect mineralogy, porosity, fluids, pressure and elastic properties at wells with the seismic response away from those wells.
A team may load logs, checkshots, seismic volumes, horizons, pressure observations and geological interpretations, then calibrate a rock-physics model and test fluid or lithology scenarios. Well ties, wavelet estimation and AVO/AVA analysis help determine whether those scenarios explain the measured seismic. Conditioning and inversion can then carry the assumptions into 2D or 3D property predictions.
This is narrower than regional interpretation, structural mapping, well planning or reservoir modeling. Those tasks may remain in another platform. RokDoc becomes relevant when the decision depends on whether a lithology, fluid, pressure or elastic-property scenario is consistent with both well control and seismic behavior.
The connected workflow is the product’s main argument
The Rock Physics module covers log analysis, upscaling, forward modeling, well ties and conceptual 2D seismic work. The Reservoir Characterization module adds recipe-based seismic conditioning, inversion, 4D analysis and optional Ji-Fi facies-and-impedance inversion.
Linked recipes allow a change in a parameter to be followed through conditioning and inversion rather than hidden in a chain of manually transferred files. Ji-Fi is documented as a 3D joint impedance-and-facies inversion method that uses rock-physics consistency and can investigate geological and data uncertainty. It is an optional technology, not a capability to assume in every RokDoc license.
Pressure and geomechanics widen the use case
Ikon Science’s Pressure Prediction and Geomechanics documentation covers 1D-to-3D pressure and stress modeling using well, drilling, geological and seismic inputs. This makes RokDoc relevant to pre-drill pressure prediction and well-planning risk, provided the transforms are suitable for the geological setting and calibrated to reliable pressure and velocity data.
Integration does not remove non-uniqueness. Sparse wells, poor seismic bandwidth, uncertain wavelets and an unsuitable rock-physics model can still produce a convincing but weak result. Scenario comparison and uncertainty communication should therefore remain visible in any prospect ranking or well-planning handoff.
Version 2026.4 and the module boundary
The RokDoc 2026.4 announcement, dated 21 September 2026, describes a generalized mineral-mixing framework, a new Spectra attribute across RokDoc 2D, 3D and Attrimod, expanded pressure-interpretation tools, and viewer and large-dataset workflow changes. These are vendor-reported additions; they do not establish the runtime or accuracy improvement for a particular project.
Rock physics, reservoir characterization, pressure prediction, geomechanics, Ji-Fi, Deep QI, connectors and distributed processing can have different prerequisites and license features. Ikon Science documents Petrel and OpenSpirit connectors plus an External Interface for proprietary calculations. The add-ons overview and 2026.2 public license matrix are useful starting points, but a quotation should map every required exchange, compute and automation path to a licensed component.
RokDoc or Petrel QI?
| Choose around | RokDoc | Petrel Quantitative Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Primary fit | Rock-physics-led geoprediction connecting QI, pressure and geomechanics | QI workflows inside the wider Petrel interpretation environment |
| Workflow context | A dedicated platform with optional connectors and add-ons | A natural extension for teams already centered on Petrel |
| Documented scope | Rock physics, well ties, conditioning, inversion, characterization, pressure and geomechanics | Rock physics, fluid substitution, AVO/AVA, conditioning and deterministic or stochastic inversion |
SLB describes Petrel Quantitative Interpretation as providing conditioning, rock physics, fluid substitution, AVO/AVA analysis and inversion inside Petrel. That can make Petrel QI the simpler choice for a team that wants to keep interpretation and QI in one established project. Our broader profiles of Petrel and Kingdom cover the surrounding interpretation context.

Our take
RokDoc 2026.4 is a strong shortlist candidate for geophysics and subsurface teams that want a traceable path from well-based rock physics into seismic conditioning, inversion, pressure and geomechanics. A general interpretation platform or a smaller standalone tool may be easier to justify when that connected geoprediction workflow is not the core requirement.
Public pricing and current workstation requirements were not available in the sources reviewed. Before adoption, test the exact modules and connectors with representative wells and seismic volumes, then check client and server compatibility, data formats, compute scaling, automation, training and support. The pilot should show whether the team can reproduce a result and explain how each rock-physics assumption affected it.
